What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is evidenced-based and one of the most successful treatments for trauma. It is also successful in treating depression, anxiety, phobias, low self-esteem, negative self-beliefs and much more. You can use EMDR to help you overcome complicated feelings of inadequacy, anger, guilt, shame & anxiety. EMDR really believes in the brain’s innate ability to heal itself and helps provide the optimal environment for deep, transformational healing. It is an accelerated form of therapy because it puts the brain in a state where processing speeds are very quick. People typically see results much quicker with EMDR than with traditional talk therapy.
Where therapy meets science
EMDR helps rewire neuron networks in your brain by creating more adaptive, healthy neural pathways and connecting those to maladaptive, unhealthy networks resulting in profound change in how people feel about themselves and the experiences they have lived through. Your therapist will use a form of bilateral stimulation during sessions which can include eye movements, tapping or sounds that will increase the speed your brain processes with. The concept is similar to REM sleep where your eyes are subtly twitching left to right. REM sleep is where dreaming takes place and often people will feel they dreamt for hours when in reality it was only for minutes. This is due to the very high processing speeds the brain is experiencing and EMDR puts the brain in a similar state.
When the heart and mind become one.
EMDR helps connect the brain and the heart in a profound way. Often, people can logically know that a trauma or tragedy was not their fault or that they are deserving of love but they do not feel it. EMDR helps the brain connect thought with feeling in a meaningful way which helps people be able to logically know “It wasn’t my fault” or “I am worthy of love” and feel its truth in their body as well. It can help you feel free from your past and prepare for your future. EMDR does not change what happened in the past but does change how the past is stored in your nervous system which positively impacts your sense of self, relationships and overall functioning.
